Man vs Horse race

A horse has once again beaten man in Wales' wackiest endurance event - the annual Man versus Horse race. The 27th annual Man versus Horse marathon held on Saturday in Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, was won by a horse.

Tarran Bay, ridden by Denise Meldrum from Holywell in Flintshire, won the race in Powys, beating the nearest human competitor by nine minutes.

A Kenyan in the British Army, Haggai Chepkwony, was the first man home.

Nearly 300 individual runners and around 30 horses competed over the 22 mile course in temperatures reaching around 27C.

Event organiser Gordon Green said the unusually warm weather had played a part in making times around the course significantly slower.

"But we were prepared for the heat and took lots of precautions, providing extra drinking stations for the competitors," he said.

Tarran Bay finished the event in two hours 10 minutes 29 seconds while Mr Chepkowny crossed the line in two hours 19 minutes 16 seconds in the 27th annual showdown, which helps put the small mid Wales town on the international map.

Each year the race attracts competitors from all over the world, including Canada, Australia, Britain and other European countries.

Throughout the race, the humans try to outrun the horses over marsh, mountain, and bog.

Two years ago it was a different story when man triumphed for the first time in the annual encounter.

Huw Lobb, 29, took home the winner's £25,000 prize and is still the sole non-equine to cross the line first.
