English icons

Yorkshire Pudding, the stiff upper lip, the Tube map and Winnie the Pooh have been added to the latest list of icons of England voted for by the public.

The 21 additions, which also include English weather, Iron Bridge and Doctor Who,
narrowboats on canals; cheddar; Rolls Royce; the V-sign; the robin; the Peak District; Iron Bridge; Guy Fawkes Night; Sergeant Pepper; the Thames; the red telephone box; the rose; Wimbledon; roast beef and Yorkshire pudding; and Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management. have been revealed by the government's online Icons project.

Officials plan to expand the list to 100 by the end of the year.

Among the first 12 to be announced in January were Routemaster buses, Stonehenge and the cup of tea.
A panel of experts compiled the list after going through the public's nominations.

A total of 74 have been announced so far.

Jerry Doyle, managing director of Icons, said: "All the icons chosen for a place of honour in the Icons collection are developing into a vibrant portrait of England."

The project is funded by Culture Online, part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
