Just across the road

Fire crews barely had to cross the road to fight a blaze at a Wellington suburban restaurant early this morning.

The Italian restaurant in Johnsonville, north of Wellington, was well alight when crews arrived from the fire station less than 100 metres away shortly after 5.15am today.

A Johnsonville Fire Service spokesman said it was "very lucky" the restaurant was so close to the fire station.

"We were able to get to the scene relatively quickly and the crews managed to confine the fire to an outside wall, part of the roof and an office area," he said.

The spokesman said it appeared the fire was triggered when a mains electrical cable leading into the building failed.

A roundabout leading to State Highway One was closed as firefighters battled the blaze for almost two hours.
