The owner of a chipshop is being probed by town hall officials because his shop smells . . . of fish and chips.
Environmental health staff wrote to Steve Morton to say they were investigating an “odour from the extract ventilation system”.
He feared a drain problem but was stunned when he was told: “We are investigating a smell of fish and chips.” Steve, 42, took over New Scarborough Fisheries in Wakefield, West Yorks, four years ago but the chip shop has been operating without a problem for 40 years.
He said: “You’d think they’d twig that a fish and chip shop smells of fish and chips. It’s absolutely crazy.”
The dad-of-one has pinned the letter from Wakefield District Council in his shop he runs with wife Margaret, 39.
The council is monitoring the odours and told Steve he could be BANNED from having fish and chips smells in his chippy.
Steve added: “The smell of freshly fried fish and chips is wonderful. My equipment works properly. Does the council want me to pay someone to stand outside with an air freshener? This is a waste of time and money.”
A council spokesman said: “We have a duty to investigate complaints.”
