Slum art

One of Rio's most dangerous slums has been transformed into an outdoor art gallery.

Vila Cruzeiro became notorious in 2002 , when a journalist was dismembered and incinerated by local drug traffickers.

Now two Dutch artists , Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn, are encouraging budding artists from the favela to turn their shacks into vast murals ( as pictured left).

"Everyone approves of it 100%" says one resident. "Look , even the dogs have stopped pissing on the walls!"
