TESCO staff threatened to call cops when Andrew Williamson tried to buy EIGHT pasties. Taxi boss Andrew, 48, was told to put two back because there was a six-pasties-only rule.
And when he argued, staff at the supermarket warned they would call police.
The Ginster's pasties had been reduced from around £1 to 36p for two after reaching their sell-by date.
Dad-of-four Andrew picked them up for a family tea for eight people. He said: “I was stunned when the till girl said I could only have six. The shop was about to close and presumably they would’ve been thrown away. I started asking the customers around me about it and they thought it was stupid as well. They were pasties, not paracetamol — so it’s not like I can overdose on them.”
After half an hour staff at the store in Batley, West Yorks, relented and sold him all eight — along with £45-worth of groceries.
Andrew, of nearby Ossett, said: “In the end there were about 20 staff round the checkout and dozens of customers watching. I felt like a criminal.
“One of the staff even threatened to call the police. I was expecting Jeremy Beadle to appear at any moment. It was ridiculous.”
A Tesco spokeswoman said: “We operate a commonsense approach to multi-purchasing to ensure the widest range of products is available for everyone. We would like to apologise if Mr Williamson felt mistreated and for this inconvenience.”
If this is Tesco's "commonsense approach" I'd hate to see their "really-stupid-rule approach.
ReplyDeleteI so want to test this pasty theory out !
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you have Morrisons there up in Scotland, but they've started a new policy of asking EVERYONE their age when purchasing alcohol.
Last week a grumpy old man got incensed when asked , he started ranting and raving about a bloody stupid rule ... supervisors were called ... we in the neighbouring "fast lane" thought it was highly amusing ... where-as the poor sods behind him were looking rather disgruntled at being held up.
We have Morrisons. I think they have a policy of only employing ex airline staff at their checkouts. Hence the problems.
