Belgium has been put up for auction and attracted a top bid of $17 million before eBay stopped the spoof sale.
A spokesman for the online auctioneer says it cannot host the sale of anything virtual or unrealistic.
The hoax auction was offered as Belgium faces a political crisis which has led to discussion over the country's future as a federal state.
It also has a large national debt.
