A 32-tonne lorry was left hanging over the edge of an historic stone bridge after the driver apparently went for a cup of tea. The underbridge inspection vehicle had somehow rolled away with its engine running at about 3am yesterday. It smashed through a wall and came to a halt above a grassy incline at a beauty spot known as Crook O’Lune.
Roadworks were being carried out on on the bridge, which spans the River Lune near Caton, Lancashire. The bridge was reopened to traffic at 8.30am, hours before a 31-tonne crane arrived to remove the lorry. Police are investigating the incident.
