Authorities near Fort Worth, Texas, have accused a man of placing a dog in a washing machine and turning on the hot water cycle.
The dog was euthanized after failing to respond to treatment.
Chad Ellis was indicted on a charge of an animal cruelty by a Tarrant County grand jury on Friday. The case stemmed from a February investigation into dogs missing from a neighborhood northeast of Fort Worth.
Investigators say a woman told them she found the year-old female black Labrador retriever mix inside a closet in January. Police reports say Ellis told her he had put the dog in the washing machine after he became angry.
Police say they went to Ellis' home and found three dogs that had been reported missing by his neighbours.
