At about 6 a.m. Thursday, a garbage truck driver had just emptied a dumpster into his truck and activated the hydraulic ram to crush the trash, said cops.
He had been driving from the alley north of Whyte Avenue west of 106 Street for about a block when he heard someone screaming for help.
The driver looked and saw a man trying to get out of the contained trash area of the truck. Police say the 43-year-old man was homeless and had fallen asleep in the dumpster.
Paramedics transported the man to the University of Alberta hospital with a broken jaw.
