Even lunatics have human rights

A police force today defended its decision to deliver a takeaway meal to a suspected car thief who had been hurling bricks at officers from a rooftop.

Barry Chambers, 27, clambered up a drain pipe at 2am on Tuesday morning and stubbornly refused to come down from the two-storey property in Gloucester city centre for the rest of the day. A large area was sealed off after he started dismantling a chimney and threw bricks at cars and passers-by.

Vehicles, property and a fire engine within the police cordon were damaged as missiles rained down, and residents had to be moved from nearby houses.

Frustrated police negotiators then agreed to send a Kentucky Fried Chicken takeaway up to Chambers, with a bottle of cola.

A crowd looked on in amazement as the hot food was delivered to him via a cherry picker.

But a police spokeswoman said: "We still have to look after his well-being and human rights."

The man eventually gave in.

If I'd been a cop there I'd have made a sweepstake , 1 point for a hit with a pebble , 3 for drawing blood with a direct hit with a brick ... and 20 points for making the twat fall off the roof !
