Meanwhile, a thief made off with an estimated £25,000 worth of rings from another Edinburgh jewellers. The thief stunned on-lookers when he took a sledgehammer to the window of the Hamilton and Inches store in George Street yesterday morning.
He then grabbed a tray of rings from the window display, with many of them falling to the ground in his haste, and sped off on a bicycle.
Staff at the store quickly picked up the rings that had been dropped, and believe the raider managed to hold on to five rings, each worth up to £5000.
The man had been seen cycling past the store just before the robbery.
He was described as being about 6ft, white, slim, and was wearing a dark T-shirt, a black baseball cap and black jeans.
A police spokesman said: "This was a particularly brazen smash and grab raid."
