Male tortoise lays eggs

A 60-year-old tortoise has surprised her Swansea Valley owner by turning out to be a she, not a he.

Peter Gunn always assumed Sammy was male - until he recently started to find eggs in the corner of her pen.

The Tortoise Trust believes the unusually warm weather that hit the UK in April is to blame as it has heard of three similar cases this week.

Sammy has laid six eggs but pensioner Mr Gunn, of Ystradgynlais, is certain she has not been mating. He said: "At first I thought they must have been laid by one of the big birds that come down to steal her lettuce leaves.

Mr Gunn said the tortoise had laid six eggs, but squashed four of them so there were only two left. "She is in her pen for six months of the year and in a box in the garage for the rest of the year so I know she has not mated with another tortoise."

Mr Gunn said he had owned Sammy since his parents bought her as a present when visiting London at the end of World War II.

"They paid 10 bob for her and she arrived in a box in the post," he added.

The last sentence is the answer to the riddle. Those bloody postmen tamper with everything.

I was awaiting comments on the "10 bob" ... obviously we're old enough to know what that is :(
