Money - Laundering

Careless Britons unwittingly lost more than £160 million in cash last year - by accidentally putting it through washing machines.

Meanwhile, the bill for mobile phones, MP3 players and even travel cards left in clothing which goes through a spin cycle was nearly £300 million.

More than two million commuters struggled to get to work in the past year as a result of washing a season ticket for a train or bus, while items such as keys, coins and other metallic objects left in clothing caused an estimated £2 billion damage to washing machines.

Experts at Halifax Home Insurance estimate that washing machines damaged by items put in the wash accidentally leak enough water to meet the daily requirements of more than 430,000 households each year.

Last year, Britons ruined some £163 million in cash by putting it through the wash and destroyed £251 million worth of mobile phones as well as MP3 players worth £13 million.

So how is it that the only things damaged in my washing machine are my shirt collars?
