Norway's royal palace ran the risk of being sold cheap on the auction website eBay when a hoax advertisement offered it for $US1, media have reported.
The offer read: "Cheap! The royal palace of a young monarchy, just 102 years old, is on sale".
"At the moment, the castle is in Norway but it can be moved to another country whenever," it said.
"The King and Queen are not included in the price but I am sure that they would move with the royal palace."
The palace had already fetched a bid of $US99,999,999 before being taken down yesterday morning.
According to media reports, the anonymous ad featuring a picture of the stately yellow building was still posted on eBay on Wednesday evening and was to run until March 14.
The Norwegian royal palace in the centre of the capital, Oslo, was built in 1849 and is the residence and workplace of King Harald and Queen Sonja.
Contacted by AFP, the royal palace's spokesperson has declined to comment on the case.
