BOSTON, Aug. 16 - A self-described U.S. gypsy in Boston has pleaded guilty to 20 counts of fraud in which he deliberately swallowed broken glass to sue food companies.
Ronald Evano, 48, admitted to the scheme between 1997 and 2005 that his wife Mary also participated in, the Boston Globe reported Thursday.
Prosecutors said the couple used various aliases and collected more than $200,000 in false insurance claims. The pair bought food at restaurants and stores from Boston to Washington, ate it along with broken glass and then made their claims, the report said.
U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan's office said the couple also rang up about $100,000 in medical bills which have not been paid.
Evano's wife remains at large. He will be sentenced on Oct. 24.
