5 illegal immigrant Nigerians were found and arrested working in London's immigration department.
The under-fire Home Office has suffered a fresh blow with the news five illegal immigrants were found cleaning one of the department's offices in London.
The Nigerians were arrested after checks on their immigration status.
They were working for a firm which was contracted to clean Becket House, part of the Immigration and Nationality directorate (IND). A probe is planned.
Home Secretary John Reid was already under pressure after saying he had no idea how many illegals were in the UK.
The Home Office said: "These individuals were the employees of a firm contracted to provide cleaning services.
"It is policy that all employees and contracted employees working in Immigration and Nationality Directorate buildings have security and employment checks carried out, which include checks on their immigration status.
"Of course we will investigate further and appropriate action will be taken as necessary."
Conservative home affairs spokesman David Davis said: "It has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous when the Home Office's ability to catch illegal immigrants is so bad that they even manage to employ them as cleaners, presumably without realising."

The U.K.'s problem is minor compared to the hordes flowing over our borders here in the States.
There seem to be benefits stemming from the whole island thing.

I agree rabenstrange, shame they built a bloody tunnel for them to try and get in . I once joked to my girlfriends daughter that Britain has a wall of flowers on the south coast to block the smell of the French.
