Flat-pack housing

Tyneside, UK --_ It's one thing putting up your own wardrobe or bookcase. But tempers are sure to flare when it comes to flatpack homes. Ikea at the MetroCentre will be the first site in the UK to sell the Swedish homes together with a plot to put them on.

But fortunately the timber-framed houses and flats will already be put up for you.

The estate of about 90 homes, designed by construction firm Skanska in partnership with Ikea, are to be put up in the centre of Gateshead.
Called BoKlok, pronounced "Boo Clook", the houses were pioneered in Sweden in the 1990s for low-income families and are now on the market.

Gateshead Council gave the go-ahead for the wooden houses to come to Tyneside, after councillors agreed to sell a plot of land near Gateshead International Stadium to Live Smart @ Home, who are developing BoKlok in the UK.
