May the Sale be with you

The brown hooded cloak worn by Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars trilogy fetched £54,000 from an anonymous bidder at a major auction of movie and television memorabilia in London yesterday. The mantle had lain forgotten for years in a warehouse and was rented out for costume parties until its provenance was discovered last year.

But that was upstaged by the biggest surprise sale of the day: a two-piece tweed suit and hat worn by Sean Connery as Harrison Ford's father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. This had been expected to fetch between £1,000 and £1,500 but went for a stonking £26,400 instead.

Another surprise big ticket item was the beaten metal helmet worn by Terry Jones as Sir Bedevere in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It sold for £10,000, more than 20 times its pre-sale estimate of £400-500. "It's just a metal bucket," a bemused costume collector in the saleroom was heard to say.

Other costumes that went under the hammer yesterday included a fur-lined dressing gown from Evita, which fetched £2,700, and James Bond's dinner jacket from Thunderball, again worn by Sean Connery, which was sold for £33,600.
