A dustcart was held hostage by furious villagers — after binmen said there was “too much” rubbish to collect. Locals had put out two collection’s-worth of trash after claiming the workers had missed the previous fortnightly round.
But when the binmen said they would not take it all, more than a dozen outraged residents surrounded the dustcart — and one used his car to block it in. And the stunned council employees had to ring bosses to tell them: “The residents won’t let us move our lorry.”
The stand-off only ended two hours later as cops arrived and the council promised the rubbish would be collected. The refuse collectors denied missing the previous collection in the village of Meltham, West Yorks.
But ringleader Kevin Harrison, 52 — who used his car as a blockade — said: “When they refused to take the rubbish they had not taken the other week it was the last straw. We feel we have now made a significant point.”
A Kirklees Council spokesman promised to monitor the situation.
