A retired social worker known affectionately as "Rob the Rubbish" is to take his litter picking mission to Everest Base Camp. Robin Kevan, 61, from Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, earned his nickname from clearing rubbish in his home town.
He has since walked up Snowdon and Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, to pick up litter.
Mr Kevan will fly to Nepal in October and then trek to Everest base camp at 5,380m (17,600 ft). The litter he collects will be carried down to the village of Gorak Shep and buried.
The three-week expedition is being supported by UK-based trekking company Travel and Trek. Mr Kevan will also be filmed on the trip for a documentary about his rubbish clearing activities.
"Rob the Rubbish" said he had only suggested going to Everest as a joke when he appeared on Channel 4's Richard and Judy chat show.
He told BBC News: "They asked me what I was going to do next. I said I'd heard Everest base camp was bad [and] if someone paid my fare I'd go."
Travel and Trek managing director Terry Crosby saw the interview and offered to fly Mr Kevan out.
