Grasshopper firestarter

BERLIN - Firemen in the west German town of Stade rushed to investigate a possible blaze at a bank only to find a grasshopper had inadvertently triggered the alarm.

Passers-by had called the fire department after noticing flashing lights in the bank.

Fearing a fire caused by an electrical fault, the firemen hurried to the scene and discovered that a 5 centimetre-long (2 inch) grasshopper had wedged itself between two power supply lines, while apparently defending itself against birds.

The insect had served as a conductor, causing a short circuit and the flashing lights, police spokesman Rainer Bohmbach said.
