JK's manuscript fright

US airport security staff almost stopped Harry Potter author JK Rowling from boarding a flight back to Britain because she would not part with the manuscript for the final Potter book.

The writer told fans on her website that she would have considered sailing back to Britain if security officials had not relented and allowed her to take on board the unpublished latest installment of the boy wizard's adventures.

Rowling said much of the manuscript was hand-written and she did not have a copy of anything she had completed while in the United States.

She was also not prepared to store her secret notes for the book in the aircraft hold. In the end, officials relented and allowed her to take it onto the plane tied in elastic bands, she said. Rowling was in New York for a charity book with Stephen King and John Irving when she was caught up in the heightened security measures introduced after British police foiled an alleged aircraft bomb plot on August 10.

The as-yet untitled book seven is the last in the globally successful Harry Potter series.
