Surf record

Organisers of a world record surfing attempt say 73 surfers have entered record books by catching and riding the same wave off the coast of South Africa.

"We have smashed the record," said veteran surfer Paul Botha who helped organise the feat at Muizenberg Corner in Cape Town, a long-time favoured haunt for surfers.

"We have registered the claim and got a claim number. All we need now is to get the footage edited and send it off" to the compilers of the Guiness Book of Records, Mr Botha told SAFM public radio.

More than 300 surfers took part in the effort.

The attempt was made in order to raise money for the shark spotting program along the coastline.

The Cape Town surfers believe they have beaten a previous best, set off the west coast of Ireland in May, when 44 caught the same wave.

There is also an as yet unverified attempt with 53 surfers in Bali.
