Parking picnickers

A group of people have escaped prosecution after they paid money into a parking meter - but instead of parking a car, they set up a table and had a picnic.

The group, in Charleston, South Carolina, were accused of 'obstructing public ways' after they fed the meter, then sat down and had pizza and drank (nonalcoholic) beer in the parking space.

They had the picnic to try to promote more reclaiming streets from vehicles, and encourage more outdoor dining. Picnic organiser Vince Graham said that he hoped his prosecution would turn into the 'trial of the century', thus boosting his cause.

Sadly for him, those hopes were dashed when the city dropped the charges. Best laid plans, and all that.

Still, on the plus side, the rogue picnickers will get to meet the city's Mayor, Joseph P. Reilly Jr, to talk about making the city more pedestrian friendly.

At the time of writing, it is not known if that involve turning more parking spaces into picnic slots.
