Air guitar champion

Yosuke Ochi, half of the Japanese comedy team Dainoji, retained his title as world champion of air guitar at a competition yesterday in Finland.

``I did it. I won a second straight victory,'' the 35-year- old Ochi wrote in his blog after judges gave him the highest score among 20 finalists for the Air Guitar World Championships, held Sept. 5 through 8 at the Club Teatria in Oulu, Finland.

Ochi outscored Finland's own Hikka ``Gore Kitty'' Suvanto, who received the lowest points ever in qualifying rounds in two previous championships, as well as contest favorites Guillaume ``Moche Pitt'' de Tonquedec of France and Max ``Her Jaquelin'' Heller of Austria.

Judges base their decision on how well contestants mimic playing guitar, as well as an undefined quality called ``airness.''

Finland is also home to the international sand-skiing championship and the World Wife-Carrying Championship.
