World's biggest stew

Venezuelans are attempting to cook the biggest stew in the world - enough to feed 40,000 people, officials say.

More than 100 people are helping to prepare the dish, known as a sancocho, on the streets of the capital, Caracas.

Cooks are working on specially-built stoves, throwing in 7,000kg (15,342lb) of vegetables and 3,000kg of meat to concoct 20,000 litres of stew.

Guinness Book of Records officials are overseeing the record attempt, which is being promoted by the food ministry.

The stew will take 13 hours to cook and will be dished out to passers-by at 0800 local time (1200 GMT) on Saturday.

Venezuela's food minister, Rafael Oropeza, told the EFE news agency he hoped it would be confirmed as the "biggest sancocho in history". He said he wanted to beat the current record, set in Mexico in July.
