A man who made more than 1,100 prank calls to the police emergency number over a period of about three months was arrested Friday, law enforcers said.
The man, Naoki Sato, a 44-year-old self-proclaimed driver of no fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of fraudulent obstruction of official duties. He has reportedly admitted to the allegations against him.
Investigators said that between June 1 and Aug. 23 last year, Sato made a total of 1,110 calls to the 110 police emergency number from the Tokyo metropolitan area, obstructing officials from carrying out their duties.
In some of the calls he remained silent, and in others he uttered words such as "idiot," investigators said. Police said he did not falsely report any crimes.
Police tracked down Sato from the number of the cell phone he allegedly used to make the calls, using a caller display system. They are investigating his motives.
