Holy in the wall

Churches far from town centres should be allowed to install cash machines, a senior clergyman said yesterday. Archdeacon of Lincoln the Venerable Arthur Hawes said the machines would be a service to the community by churches.

He explained: "People in rural parts have to travel long distances to get cash, which costs them money. So why not put a cash machine somewhere handy, like in a church?"

The archdeacon said the proposal had not been opposed by parishioners. Canon Chris Sugden, of the Anglican Mainstream group, backed the idea.

He said: "With the withdrawal of banks and post offices in rural areas, it is appropriate that churches, as community buildings should be available for services of this kind."

A Church of England spokesman said permission would be needed from each local diocese.
