Meteorite showers Gujarat

Ahmedabad:-- Fragments of the meteorites that fell in parts of Gujarat have been gathered by scientists who plan to conduct extensive tests to determine their origin, age and chemical composition.

The glowing meteorites rained down in Kutch, Jamnagar and Rajkot districts at about 9.30 pm last night, prompting people to make frantic calls to local officials.

Fragments of meteorites have been recovered from several villages of Kutch region. The physical research Laborataory (PRL), a premier institution of the department of space, will conduct tests on them, a scientist said today.

The fragments will be brought to PRL here this evening where tests will be conducted to determine the origin of the meteorites, their radioactivity, age and other features, the scientist said.

Kutch collector Dhananjay Diwedi said local officials had collected meteorite fragments from Bharuch district.

Meteorites are small bodies from outer space that consist of rock or metal. As they enter the earth's atmosphere, they glow as a result of heat generated by friction.

The sight of these objects hurtling down to earth created considerable excitement among people yesterday. Some people said they heard a thud when the meteorites fell to the ground.

Most meteors are particles smaller than a grain of sand. It is very rare to have meteorites hit the ground during a meteor shower, as they usually burn out in the atmosphere.
