Only in Arizona

KINGMAN, Ariz. -- A man who became incensed at firefighters who refused to rescue a cat stuck in a tree was arrested after he started shooting at the fire crew, officials said.

Mohave County Sheriff's deputies arrested Jeffrey Francis Cullen, 58, after the incident and booked him on four felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said.

According to a Hualapai Valley Fire Department spokeswoman, a three-person fire crew was sent to Cullen's Kingman home Thursday afternoon on a report of a tree fire, but discovered there was no fire.

Instead, Cullen told them he wanted a cat rescued from his tree and knew firefighters would only respond to a fire call, said Sandy Edwards, a department spokeswoman. A battalion chief told Cullen to call animal control or to wait for the cat to get hungry and come down.

Edwards said Cullen apparently didn't like the response.

"He went back into the house, got a small black revolver and came outside shooting," Edwards said.

The firefighters and a 12-year-old boy who had come to see the fire truck ran for their lives, Edwards said.

Arriving sheriff's deputies arrested Cullen after a brief standoff and struggle.
