Square melons

Square-shaped watermelons created for easy storage are to hit stores in the UK.

The bizarre-looking cuboid fruit caused a stir in Japan when they went on sale there five years ago. UK shoppers will get their first taste of the Brazilian-grown melons from October, according to Tesco.

Farmers create the fruit's unusual shape by putting them in transparent boxes while they grow. The melons take around 60 days to reach maturity.

Tesco exotic fruit buyer Damien Sutherland: "We"ve seen samples of these watermelons and they literally stop you in their tracks because they are so eye-catching. These square melons will make it easier than ever to eat because they can be served in long strips rather than in the crescent shape."

They will go on sale in stores from October for under £5.

so do I , but I prefer the seedless ones, the ones with big black pips are a pain in the arse !

I bet the square ones taste like shit, apart fom that being square you'll get a lot more skin (rind?)
