World Walking the Plank championships
Self-confessed oddbods, eccentrics and foolhardy pirates took part in the World Walking the Plank championships yesterday.
The Isle of Sheppey in Kent was the venue for the contest which saw 24 "plankers" jump off the deck of the Salty Sea Pig galleon into the murky waters of Queenborough Harbour.
The contest organised by the Sheppey Pirates judged competitors on their use of piratical language, originality of costume, execution of jump, and their overall star quality.
Lorry driver John Lenton, 34, of Queenborough, walked the plank dressed as "Miss Irresistible and her twin sister" and swam off with the £100 top prize. He wore a paper overall filled with polystyrene foam, and carried on his back his "twin", a dummy who wore an overall filled with helium balloons.
Dedicated planker Heini Nielsen, from Denmark, who flew in from a holiday in Barbados to take part, came third.
