The total number of worldwide cellular connections now stands at 2.5 billion -- just 12 months after passing the 2 billion mark. Wireless Intelligence, which tracks the global mobile market said growth is currently running at more than 40 million new connections per month -- the highest volume ever.
A quarter of the growth is coming from China and India, with China's market expanding at more than 5 million new connections per month.
The rate of new connections in India has quadrupled over the last 18 months to reach a level very close to China's.
Other areas experiencing rapid growth include Russia, the U.S., Pakistan, Ukraine, Brazil, Indonesia, Nigeria and Bangladesh.
Wireless Intelligence predicted the next 500 million new connections will take 16 months, meaning that the market is on track to reach 3 billion connections around the end of next year.
