Firedancing
A Bulgarian Nestinari dancer performs barefoot over smouldering embers as part of the ancient ritual of fire dancing in the village of Varvara, 450 km south-east of the capital Sofia on Sunday. The Nestinari dance is one of the most authentic rituals, that has its origins in Bulgaria before Christianity.
The dancers were abstainers and mediators between the sky and the earth. The prayed for health, prosperity and rich harvest. The fire is lit in the afternoon by the main fire dancer. The dancing itself is performed after sunset to the accompaniment of a drum and a bagpipe.
