Legless looney

A MAN who lost both legs in a rail accident when he was just nine led police on a 80mph three-mile car chase using wooden poles to control the pedals.

Robert Bate, 27, of Seventh Street, Blackhall, County Durham, modified the K-reg Vauxhall Astra to allow him to drive it despite his handicap.

But he was jailed for 12 months and banned for two years at Newcastle Crown Court after he admitted dangerous driving and other driving offences.
