Foreign cartoons banned

Beijing: In an attempt to tighten government control over pop culture and protect its struggling film studios, China has decided to ban foreign cartoons from prime time TV, according to news reports on Sunday.

The ban takes effect from September 1 and will apply to the 'Golden Hours' of 5 to 8 pm, the Beijing Youth Daily and other media reported. The rule has been sent to television stations but has not been announced publicly.

"The reason for the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) regulation is clear. It is to protect domestic cartoon production," the newspaper Southern Metropolis News said on its website.

There was no mention of the cartoon ban on the SARFT website. Foreign cartoons, especially from Japan, have become popular among Chinese children, and the country's own animation studios have been struggling to compete with a flood of imports.

Broadcasters were told to limit use of foreign cartoons in 2000 at a time when Japanese animation dominated the market.
'
The government stepped up those controls in 2004, saying Chinese cartoons had to account for at least 60 per cent of the total shown in prime time.
