Walking 'cross the Mersey
A 6ft 9ins tall charity fund-raiser has become the first man to walk across the River Mersey with his head sticking out above the water. Graham Boanas walked along mud and sandbanks at low tide with his feet on the river bed and his head above water.
A helicopter and a hovercraft ensured his safety on Sunday's walk.
Boanas, from Hull, is raising money for Debra, a charity which helps people with the genetic skin blistering condition, Epidermolysis Bullosa.
He aims to raise £100,000 and completed a similar charity walk across the Humber last year.
He walked up to two miles from Ince Banks near Ellesmere Port to Oglet Shore near Liverpool airport.
At low tide on Sunday morning there was a narrow, hopefully shallow channel of water for Boanas to cross.
He said, "When I did the Humber it was 5ft to 5.5ft and on some practice sessions in the Mersey we were looking at a similar sort of depth, hopefully it won't be any deeper than that.Having said that, at 6ft 9ins, I think I have as best a shot as I am going to get!"
