Skateboarder sees red

YOKOHAMA -- A 36-year-old skateboarder who dodged the traffic on a Yokohama road wasn't quite able to dodge the law, and was promptly issued with a traffic ticket.

The man, an office worker from Yokohama's Totsuka-ku, was handed a "red ticket," which can lead to criminal charges. He is accused of violating the Road Traffic Law by engaging in prohibited activities on a road.

"I parked my car in a parking lot and was going to go shopping, but I had to travel a long way so I jumped on the skateboard that was in my car," police quoted the 36-year-old as saying.

Investigators said the man, whose name has been withheld, ignored a warning from a police officer and traveled for about 100 meters along the road in Yokohama's Naka-ku on his skateboard at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Traffic on the road was reportedly heavy, and because the man occupied the left lane of the road traffic behind him was forced to brake or change course, police said.

It is unusual for police to hand a red ticket to someone for skateboarding, and it's the first time Kanagawa Prefectural Police have ever done so.
