Unabomber's possesions to be auctioned

Ted Kaczynski's driver's license is among the items belonging to the convicted Unabomber that will be auctioned, according to a Sacramento federal court judge's order.

The items include hatchets and knives, clothing, typewriters, watches and papers. That list does not include about 100 items the government construes to be bomb making materials or diagrams. The items are to be delivered to an auctioneer who will sell them on the Internet.

The money raised will go toward the $15 million Kaczynski owes in restitution to victims.

Kaczynski, who is now 64, pleaded guilty in January 1998 to setting up 16 explosions that killed three people and injured 23 others around the country between 1978 and 1995. Two of the people who were killed lived in Sacramento.

A former math professor who lived a secluded life in a small Montana cabin, Kacynski built bombs and sent them to several universities and airlines. Before investigators knew who he was, the FBI referred to him as the UNABOM (from "university and airline bomber"). The media coined the name "Unabomber."

In 1995 he demanded that his paper, The Unabomber Manifesto: Industrial Society and Its Futurebe printed. It argued that technological progress must be stopped. The Washington Post and The New York Times printed it with the hopes that someone would recognize the writing style.

Kacynski's brother recognized the writing style and notified the FBI. Kacynski was arrested in April 1996.
