Less than 24 hours after Apple unveiled its new iPhone, a rival company is suing for an alleged trademark violation.
Cisco Systems filed the action in San Francisco, claiming that Apple had gone ahead with the launch despite inconclusive discussions about the use of the name.
Apple has long been asking Cisco for permission to use the trademark name.
Cisco subsidiary Linksys last year launched its own product — an internet phone — called the iPhone but said it was prepared to “share” the name provided certain conditions were met.
However, it is claimed that Apple broke off negotiations earlier this week just before Apple chief Steve Jobs announced the new device that will marry the company's iconic iPod, with a mobile phone.
A spokeswoman for Apple described Cisco's legal action as “silly”.
