NEW YORK -- After coming under fire for disqualifying a Chinese-American infant in a New Year's baby contest, Toys 'R' Us has now reversed its decision.
The company said it will give each of the three babies in the grand prize pool of the "First Baby of the Year Sweepstakes" a $25,000 savings bond.
The prize was originally supposed to go to Yuki Lin, who was born at the stroke of midnight at New York Downtown Hospital. However, she was disqualified when it turned out her mother is not a legal U.S. resident.
The original prize was instead awarded to runner-up Jayden Swain, born 19 seconds after midnight in Gainesville, Ga.
After Chinese-American advocates protested and news spread, Toys 'R' Us said it would give savings bonds to all three babies who made it into the grand prize pool. The third child is a New York infant born to a couple from El Salvador.
