Lifesaver under investigation

A FIREFIGHTER is at the centre of an investigation after wading into a river to rescue a woman, it emerged tonight.

Tam Brown, of Tayside Fire Brigade, was sent 'thank you' cards by the 20-year-old woman and her family after the incident in the River Tay in Perth on March 6.

But the 42-year-old's actions breach fire service rules which don't allow firefighters to enter the water to rescue drowning victims. Instead, they must use the "talk, reach and throw" technique which encourages the use of poles to coax victims out of the water.

Both Brown and his watch manager David Wallace, who agreed he should go in, are the subject of an investigation.
