Phonebox record

THE iconic red telephone box that featured in the film Local Hero was yesterday at the centre of a world record claim after 16 girls squeezed inside.

The previous record was 14.

The girls crammed themselves into the kiosk in the fishing village of Pennan, Aberdeenshire. They are members of a speed skipping group in the nearby village of Portsoy, in Banffshire.

The Skip 2 the Beat members, aged six to 15, were picked for the challenge by the Banffshire Coast Tourism Partnership.

Their coach Sylvanna Matheson said: "It's absolutely brilliant. We thought we could maybe get 15 but the girls managed to squeeze in another."

The aim of the attempt was to raise the profile of Banffshire, which has been hit by the decline in the fishing industry.

Bill Forsyth's 1983 film Local Hero tells the story of American oil representatives who are looking to build a giant refinery in a Scots village but find they are affected by the beauty of the surrounding area.

The previous record was set by 14 members of an Irish theatre company in an Edinburgh kiosk in 2003.

It's a cracking film, the scenery is beautiful. I'm surprised it wasn't a bigger hit. I have Mark Knopfler's music from the film ...it's so relaxing to listen to after a stressful day.
