HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania high school student has filed suit against a school district, claiming its truancy policy violates her civil rights.
The 16-year-old honor student at Central Dauphin East High School in suburban Harrisburg, identified only as A.C., has skipped classes to care for her 2-year-old child.
The suit said the district has brought complaints nine times against A.C. or her mother, leading to detention, in-school suspension, fines, warrants and suspension of her driver's license.
The lawsuit said school officials also have encouraged a switch to home-schooling or to a vocational high school with a day-care program. But a school district attorney said most of the suit's allegations are misleading.
The girl's lawyer said school districts are allowed by state law to have a policy to deal with parenting and pregnant students, but the district has not addressed the subject.
