The ship that's meant to sink
A “sinking ship” seen from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City yesterday was not a disaster. The Dockwise Swan is designed to do that! The ship is “semi-submersible,” and lowers its deck into the water to load and unload floating cargo, such as other boats. Quite a few calls to the authorities came from witnesses who were alarmed at the sight.
With the deck of the ship fully under water, it looked as though the ship was going under. Despite appearances, however, the Dockwise Swan lived up to its name and was merely doing what it was designed to do. The sight of such a massive vessel taking a dip in the harbor was still amazing.
