Off down the pub for a prayer

Church regulars in a Gwynedd town are swapping their usual meeting place for the local pub.

The move was prompted as Christ Church in Bala is closing for a £600,000 refurbishment.

Sunday services will be held at a local school, but midweek all services and meetings will be held at the White Lion hotel.

Regular Mari Jones, 80, said she welcomed the move as the pub was warmer than the present church building.

"The church is undergoing a huge refurbishment which includes removing all the fixtures, putting in a toilet, meeting room, kitchen, a new roof, heating and more comfortable seating," said the vicar Nia Morris.

Weekend services will be held at Ysgol Beuno Sant the local school whilst the work is undertaken, but there was a problem with mid-week services.

"We've been made very welcome and we will hold the comunion service very Thursday morning, Wednesday prayers and any other meetings we need to at the White Lion," Mrs Morris said.

"I always say that if Jesus Christ came to Bala, he'd be in Somerfield, the White Lion, the leisure centre, in the hotels, the library, everywhere really, not just living in the church - he'd be out with the people. I think it is a very good idea to use the White Lion."
