Evicted for 75p

A parish council in Gloucester has been evicted from its village hall – over rent arrears of 75p.

The landlord has accused Haresfield Parish Council of defaulting on the peppercorn rent of 25p per year for the past three years.

Mark Heywood, a farmer whose family owns the land and hall, has terminated the lease and demanded the council return its keys.

Village hall treasurer Sue Cowburn said: 'I wrote to the landlord on behalf of the committee and enclosed £2 – but it was returned because we missed the deadline.'
