Dad's army statue

A bronze statue of Dad's Army character Captain Mainwaring could stand in the Norfolk town where the BBC series was filmed, if a councillor gets his way.

Thetford town councillor Stuart Wright, 42, is aiming to raise £20,000 to fund the statue of the fictional Home Guard captain and bank manager.

It would stand near a monument to Thomas Paine, whose writings set the foundations of democratic government.

Mr Wright said: "The series was filmed around Thetford and I am a great fan."

Captain Mainwaring was played by actor Arthur Lowe in the series which ran on BBC television from 1968 to 1977.
