Banksy's on the way to the Bank

The graffiti artist Banksy has set a new auction record for his work after a bidding frenzy at Sotheby’s in London.

A series of Kate Moss pictures, in which the supermodel is depicted in the style of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe prints, fetched £50,400, while his stencil of the Mona Lisa, sprayed green and with paint dripping from her eyes, sold for £57,600. Both were more than double his previous record price of £21,000.

The Moss pictures, which were bought by a private collector, had been estimated to fetch between £10,000 and £15,000.

The artist has a celebrity following, including the actors Brad Pitt, Jude Law and Keanu Reeves. Angelina Jolie, another film star, reportedly spent more than £200,000 on his work at a show in Los Angeles last month.
